I don’t feel like smoking and I certainly don’t have cravings or miss it. To be honest, I don’t even think about it anymore.

Yesterday I bought myself a mean little light road machine. It’s certainly not the top of the line road bike but it’s not half bad at all. It’s fitted with a complete Shimano 105 set and is a mix of carbon/alloy compact frame. The top part is carbon while the bottom alloy.

I’m about to head out to pick up some nice Shimano RO99 shoes and I’ll be ready to roll and fall over at the lights because I’ve never ridden clips before.

With old age (ok so I’m not that old) comes health problems and so today, as a prelude to my special day tomorrow, I chipped a tooth by doing nothing more than breathing. It just decided to fall apart. Yesss! Oh woe is me and all that.

On a brighter note, I’m really looking forward to this weekend and drowning my sorrows!

It’s been a while. 15 years a smoker. Half my life give or take a month.

I’ve been urged to quit by friends and family for years now. I’ve even tried to a few times with varying degrees of success. A day, a week, even half a year at one stage. There was something missing from each of those attempts. A want.

People quit for all sorts of reasons but whatever the reason, unless they really want to quit it’s an exercise in torture. It really is. It’s akin to starving yourself. Each time I tried to quit I found some excuse to have just one more that turned into one more pack and back to the old habbit. It was really difficult. This time however it has been one of the easiest things I have ever done. You want to know why? Because I simply had to do nothing. Smoking turns out to be the difficult thing to do when you finally decide you want to quit. I don’t think about them after a feed, when I wake up, when around a smoker, when drinking, when getting into my car, when getting off a train… It’s liberating.

To all the smokers that have ever thought about quitting or are planning to… don’t. Not until you want to. I’m not going to turn into one of those moronic reformed smokers that can’t wait to tell you how easy it is. Puff on my brothers and sisters. Fuck society for telling you not to smoke. It’s your choice to want or not.

A few weeks back a good mate of mine fixed me up with a light mountain bike for next to nothing. He works in a bike shop and is now my bike mechanic. Pit crew as I call him. Since I got it I’ve been riding around here and there and even began catching the train several stations away from my home one and riding back. Don’t ask why, it just seems more fun riding with a purpose rather than around the block a few times.

Tonight I drove my car to my mates house with the bike in the back. Camelback full of water and a couple of new lights fitted and I set off on a one hour or so bike ride home. It was heaps fun and I was going well thanks to a relatively level ride home. About 15 minutes walk away from my home… well, I walked. Got a flat tyre so I pushed my pushie the rest of the way content with my effort and not really all that tired. Looking forward to an even longer ride next time and I think I’ll carry a spare tube in the bag just in case.

Now I just have to get my car back!
